….Enugu State Governor

By Okey Igwesi

The slogan: “Power belong to people “is a popular mantra that drives democracy. Is this popular catchphrase now throne to dogs by our new crops of politicians?!
Does Power really belongs to people in Nigeria or a few who manipulate the majority for their own interest? Is the choice of Political party no longer the decision and the rights of the masses to decide? Must this right be made and enforced on the masses by leaders who control the structure and the common wealth of the state?! Should the decision of political party, as it is today belong to few and where to belong be the rights of few who could at any point change or dump their political party and compel the rest to follow suit, not minding whether such party through which they got to power in the first place is suitable to the rest of the masses or not?!
The masses must be switched off if the leaders are no longer at peace with former: and this must be without question! “This is indeed democracy in action in Nigeria “!
This is the case of politics and our new found democracy today!
The, level of Defection by our elected politicians from their political party to the ruling political party APC is worrisome, more, without due process and recourse to anti party laws and ideology that supposedly be the guide for politicians in all these gambling: this , therefore call to questions; “what kind of system are we really practicing or politicians trying to lead this nation to: “one party or multy party democracy of governance?”
Watching the level of impunity and abuse of democracy, in Nigeria in recent times, by politicians who dump their former political parties that built them up to the ruling APC; one wonders, if they are really doing this with their senses or just being manipulated by unseen hands?.
Multi-party democracy in Nigeria is as old as our independent and must not be diminished by this present and greedy crops of politicians. Separation of power and multi-party system is the base and foundation of democracy. They are what drive power and genuine opposition; without which, the powers of the legislature and the judiciary to check the excesses of the Executives will be eroded: “and perhaps lead to one party state of autocracy!
Watching the Executive governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah in a press conference, today, 14th October, 2025 dumped his former political party, the People Democratic Party, PDP that brought him up politically to a ruling APC, raised more questions than answers.
His attempts to defend his actions could not help or justify his actions but rather created a scenario of what the great Nationalist and Zikist, late Chief Mokwugo Okoye in his letter to great Zik during crisis in their party, National Council of Nigeria and Cameroon, NCNC in early 60s wrote: “The greatest casualty in our party and our relationship today is THE TRUTH” .
Defending his position and in answers to barrage of questions from journalists, one could observe Dr Peter Mbah’s twisting facts and fabricating liars , all to hoodwink the gullible masses of nd’Enugu to accept and join him to decamp to APC, which he described, “as movement and best, come 2027 election.
The major question: “must Enugu as a State be in APC before their rights from the central government given to them?”
Must all the States governors in the federation be in APC as they appeared to be, before they could perform or discharge their duties to the people that elected them?
Where is the federating system of governance in Nigeria constitution and the role/ functions of members of national assembly from each State of the Federation?
What has other governors in APC, the ruling party done differently and better to warrant our governor, Dr Peter MBA to dump the PDP that brought him up?
These and more questions/explanation are what our governor, owe the great nd’Enugu before they will follow him to his new found political party, the APC.
Let no one be deceived, President Ahmed Tinubu and his party APC don’t like the igbos. His policies and actions speak volumes. The level of insecurity in the middle belt and South East and recently the destruction of igbo properties in Lagos under his watchful eyes by his boy, the Lagos State Governor, Sanwu Olu are clear case in point of hates.!
Worst, is the continuous detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu which our governor said must be solved by political solution while notable terrorists are granted pardon and freedom;”. This is another serious case of hate against the Igbos and our governor must know this”.
Like the anchor of this press conference, Mr Seun Akimoloye of Channel TV news rightly and lastly asked: “Dr Peter Mbah, if you loose your second chance to be the governor of Enugu State by this your action today by dumping PDP and the people of nd’Enugu to APC, will you regret this action?”
This is a serious and hunting question that only our governor, Dr Peter Mbah must answer, and to many, “the action of the governor is a dangerous vision:” with more questions: “what is special about APC?”.
