Journalists’ health more vital, says NUJ Grace Ike

By Our Reporter

Madam Grace Ike Z., Chairperson of Abuja Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Council of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has said that the physical well-being of Journalists and Media Practitioners (JMPs) is vital in addition to other safety measures on the fields of assignments in Nigeria especially when face with hazard of the profession.

Grace Ike, Abuja FCT Council made this known in contributions during Validation of a Safety Handbook for JMPs in Nigeria organized recently by National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in partnership with Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) in Abuja saying that the physical fitness of Journalist on assignment sensing danger is one among other essential mechanisms of safety.

Represented at the Validation Workshop by Hon. PG Osisam Ede, Secretary of Press Centre Management Committee (PCMC), Abuja FCT Council of NUJ, she among other vital contributions lays emphasize health and ability to escape an encountered danger zone safely during hazardous engagement in the course of Journalism duties.

Hon. Ede informs that Abuja FCT Council’s administration under leadership of Chairman Grace Ike treats health and well-being of Journalists with utmost important by organizing regular medical checkup on members, sports, Walk-to-life exercises in addition to sponsored free hospital health insurance scheme for members.

The Book, “Safety Handbook for Journalists and Media Practitioners” is aimed at educating JMPs to “Know your Rights, stay Safe and to Speak Freely” published by NHRC in partnership with KAS Foundation as manual for the practitioners.

Mr. Tony Ojukwu, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), Executive Secretary of NHRC of Nigeria says “Journalism is a Public Service” remarking that “Journalists are endangered species because of vulnerability to attacks while exercising duties”.

Tony Ojukwu, SAN was represented by Alhajia Fatima A. Mohamed in the Commission who read the address to participants noting that “Protecting Journalists is essential” because “Every day, Journalists go where others may not go. They ask difficult questions, uncover wrongdoing, report events and help people understand what is happening around them.

“In doing so, Journalists help protect democracy, promote accountability and human rights. But Journalism can also be risky as Journalists may face: Threats and harassment, violence and intimidation, arrest and detention. Also; Online abuse and digital attacks, surveillance, equipment seizure or destruction and threats against family members.

Mr. Achike Chiude, National Secretary from National Secretariat of NUJ caution on practitioners to be weary of what he called “Fake arrest” as dubious elements in the society fake security agencies in making arrest of unsuspecting Journalists and innocent citizens for dubious exploits.

Ms. Itta Bassey, Chairperson of Abuja FCT Council of Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) contributes that “The use of experienced professionals during assignments would be helpful in preservation of working data and equipment when attacked while on hazardous assignments.

Barrister Angela Uwandu Uzoma-Iwuchukwu of Avocats Sans Frontieres France advised that when attacked or arrested, JMPs should also maintain contact with relevant professional and support organisations whom “Reports should be made to immediately for quick response”.

Organizations to contact immediately are: NUJ, Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Nigerian Press Council, Legal Aid Council of Nigeria, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), NAWOJ and Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development (CJID).

Others are; International Federation of Journalists, International Press Institute (IPI), Avocats Sans Frontieres France (ASFF) and other relevant professional networks whose important emergency contact should be kept somewhere safe and easily accessible.

The Book highlights special safety tips for conflict reporting noting that conflict reporting carries additional risks with warning that “You do not have to put yourself in unnecessary danger to prove commitment to Journalism”.

It concludes that Press freedom is a human right and Journalist safety is not a favour. It is part of the obligation to protect human rights and great an environment where the Media can work freely and independently.
