There are political mysteries that require a panel of investigators, and there are others that require only a CV, a certificate and an honest explanation.
The reported academic qualifications in Governor Peter Ndubuisi Mbah\u2019s latest INEC filing have raised a question that deserves more than political whispers: If the governor holds the higher academic qualifications previously attributed to him, why is his latest filing reportedly listing only the Senior Secondary School Certificate as his highest qualification?
Is this a matter of documentation, a difference in the requirements of the forms, an administrative explanation, or a discrepancy that the public has every right to understand? Whatever the answer, Ndi Enugu deserve clarity.
After all, the man occupying the Lion Building is not an anonymous candidate standing at a village square, promising heaven with a megaphone. He is the governor of a state whose citizens deserve transparency from those who exercise power in their name. And so, the questions come, one after another, like knocks on a door that ought not to remain shut.
Where is the explanation? Where is the clarification? And why should a matter as straightforward as academic qualification become an object of public speculation?
If the governor possesses a law degree, the public deserves to know what his INEC documentation actually says. If he has previously presented higher qualifications, the relevant records should help establish whether the latest filing is consistent with those earlier claims. If there is an innocent explanation, let it be given. If there is a misunderstanding, let it be corrected.
But if a genuine discrepancy exists, it must not be buried beneath political noise, official titles or the intimidating weight of governmental authority. A title may command protocol. It cannot command silence from a curious public. And a Barrister before a name may sound impressive, but the question of academic credentials is settled by verifiable records, not by the music of titles.
Is Governor Mbah afraid of the questions, or is there simply an explanation that has not yet been made public? That is precisely why the relevant documents and the governor\u2019s response matter. Nobody should have to guess where the truth lies. The reported development has also revived public interest in earlier controversies surrounding his NYSC certificate.
Still, those who seek public office cannot demand that citizens trust them blindly while treating reasonable questions as an inconvenience.
Enugu is not a private estate. Its people are not spectators in the theatre of their own governance. And the governor\u2019s academic history is not beyond legitimate scrutiny simply because he occupies the highest office in the state.
There is something deeply ironic about a political environment in which citizens must ask whether the documents behind a public figure\u2019s titles tell one consistent story.
The real embarrassment is not the SSCE. There is absolutely no shame in an honest secondary-school qualification. The embarrassment, if the reported discrepancy is confirmed and left unexplained, would be the inability to reconcile the public record with the credentials previously claimed.
Education is not a crime scene. A certificate is not an enemy. Verification is not persecution. And a question is not a conviction.
So, Governor Mbah, the public question remains: what exactly does your latest INEC filing say about your highest qualification, and how does it reconcile with your previously presented credentials?
A straightforward answer would be worth more than a thousand political speeches.
Until then, let the documents be examined, the facts established and the public properly informed.
In a democracy, the people are not asking for a miracle. They are asking for the truth.
